| Bungled
late-80's Highland Park stab at a semi-exotic
flagship. Much like the rival Cadillac Allante
in concept, but workaday front-drive K-car
chassis with a shorter wheelbase and a smooth
two-seat convertible body styled and built
by Chrysler. Maserati engineered a new 16-valve
twincam cylinder head to replace the eight-valve,
single-cam cap on Chrysler's 2.2 liter turbo-four.
But the resulting 200 horses learned only
with a manual five-speed transaxle; with
automatic you got the 180-bhp single-cam
engine. Many other components were lifted
from corporate bins, but the TC had unique
leather interior trim, full power equipment
and a liftoff hardtop with Thunderbird-style
porthole windows. Maserati handled that
assembly in Milan, but numerous problems
delayed deliveries until December 1988.
Interest had cooled by then, and production
ceased by late 1990. No interim changes
occurred, save an airbag steering wheel
and a 141-bhp non-turbo Mitsubishi V-6 (ousting
the 180-bhp four) in the final year. |

(if not original) idea. Interesting background;
practical for a two-seater. Handsome leather
upholstery, manageable manual soft top,
still serviceable by most any Chrysler dealer.
