| 1969
Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser Station Wagon.
Pro Highway Street Machine. Project Vista
Cruiser began life in 1969 as a special
order "Interstate" model equipped
with the optional 400 ci (G-Block 442 engine),
Turbo-Hydro 400 automatic transmission and
a 2.78 12-bolt rear end. other optins include
a third rear seat, (seating for 8) two-way
swing out rear tailgate, power rear window,
power steering, power disc brakes, cruise
control, roof rack and rear roof wing. It
was originally painted White with Wood vinyl
exterior trim and Blue interior. |
 |
| When
completed, project Vista Cruiser will be
a true "Pro-Highway" daily driveable,
street machine capable of running low 12
sec 1/4 mile times, handle a road course
and corners as well as anything that ever
came from Detroit as well as many vehicles
from Europe or Japan, ride like a dream
from coast to coast at a reasonable rpm
level on 92-octane pump gas and be a true
daily driver. |
 |
| With
all of the body molding, door handles and
roof rack removed, the soft Silver Gray
over Charcoal Gray paint accented with Black
window moldings, dark tinted windows, filled
front and rear bumpers (painted body color),
adjustable air bag suspension, modern wheels
and tires, huge brakes and a healthy nitrous
oxide equipped 400 Oldsmobile engine, Project
Vista Cruiser will project a true Street
Machine image and be relevant to most 60's
and 70's GM intermediate. |
 |
| Following
is an outline of the items, products and
suppliers that will transform Project Vista
Cruiser form an old odd-looking station
wagon into a modern multi-passenger multi-purpose
"Pro-Highway" cruiser: |
 |
| Overview
of Improvements |
 |
| ENGINE |
 |
| 400+
HP 400 Oldsmobile engine with single 625
AFB 4-barrel carburetor, Edelbrock aluminum
intake manifold, 224', 512 lift cam, MSD
Digital 6 box, Billet distributor and wires,
ported and modified "C" heads,
10:1 compression ratio engine on 92-octane
pump gas and a dual stage nitrous oxide
system to achieve our goal of a daily drivable
500 HP cruiser. |
 |
| Completed
as of 12/2005 |
 |
| The
aluminum radiator, fan shroud, new hoses
and electric fan are installed and working.
I have the new Sanden Compressor still in
the box. The Hot Rod A/C unit is mounted
under the dash and the factory unit has
been removed and a plate installed on the
firewall. |
 |
| I
also have a Meziere Electric water pump
that I planned to run as soon as I could
figure out how to run the belts for the
alternator, AC and power steering without
them going around a water pump. |
 |
| EXHAUST |
 |
| Oldsmobile
442 factory Hi-Performance "W"
& "Z" exhaust manifolds, custom
3" stainless steel dual exhaust. Catalytic
converters are not required, but will be
used for extra clean exhaust and for added
sound absorption for a smoot quiet ride. |
 |
| Completed
as of 12/2005 |
 |
| The
factory "W"&"Z"
exhaust manifolds have been cleaned, painted
and installed using stainless steel bolts
and special locks. A basic dual exhaust
system and "Turbo" mufflers are
on the car now. Sounds nice (??), but small
pipe. |
 |
| TRANSMISSION |
 |
| Modified
Turbo-Hydro 400 automatic. 2000 rpm stall
converter. |
 |
| Completed
as of 12/2005 |
 |
| The
transmission is functional, but leaks and
has not been re-built yet. I have a complete
B&M re-build kit. Valve body re-program
kit and Hole-Shot torque converter plus
a case of Trick Shift all new in the box. |
 |
| REAR
END |
 |
| 2:78
GM posi 12-bolt. |
 |
| Completed
as of 12/2005 |
 |

have changed to fluid in the rear end, but
I have not acquired a posi unit yet. New
Heavy Duty rear universal joints have been
installed. |
 |
| SUSPENSION |
 |
| 2-inch
drop front spindles, performance tubular
front upper and lower A-arms, adjustable
tie-ends, upgrade front and rear sway bars,
Billet aluminum upper (adjustable) &
lower rear control arms, urethane bushings
throughout and a 4-way adjustable air bag
suspension system with billet aluminum Hal

performance rear shocks. |
 |
| Completed
as of 12/2005 |
 |

arms, urethane bushings throughout and a
4-way adjustable Air Ride Technologies air
bag suspension system with billet aluminum
Hal adjustable front shocks (Shock-Waves)

installed. |
 |
| The
rear upper Billet aluminum adjustable control
arms still need some machining before they
can be installed. Stock upper rear control
arms are on the car now. |
 |
| BRAKES |
 |
| 12"
1LE Camaro front disc brakes, heavy duty
11"x2" Master power rear drum

 |

as of 12/2005 |
 |
| The
wheels and tires are balanced and mounted
and on the car. I have 2 extra 285/40ZR17
rear tires. All six tires are brand new
with no miles on them. |
 |

 |
| 90%
plus of the interior is installed. I have
not finished the door panels yet and it
needs a headliner. The speedometer oil pressure
and water temp gauge have been installed
in the three factory dash pods and are wired
and working. I have the tachometer, fuel
and alt gauge fitted into the dash, but
not wired up yet. The entire interior of
the car has been insulated with Dynamat.
The digital controls for the Air Ride are
mounted in the dash where the factory radio
was. |

and the Head Unit for the SecretAudio system
is mounted where the factory ash tray was.
The rest of the stereo, CD changer, Tweeters,
6"x9"'s and 12" sub woofers
are still in the factory boxes. I have three
amps, two Lightning Audio and one no name,
plus all of the stereo wiring and amp installation
hardware. A new Optima battery is in the
engine bay and another Optima battery is
mounted in the rear of the car running the
Air Ride suspension and will drive the stereo.
A battery isolatr is wired in so both batteries
charge, but run two independent circuits. |
 |
| BODY |
 |
| Remove
all body molding, emblems, roof rack and
door handles, fill bumper bolts and paint
bumpers body color, all exterior window
molding Powder painted Black, air brush
Vista Cruiser on front fenders and tailgate
in place of factory emblems. Silver Gray
over Charcoal Gray custom paint, custom
bar/billet grills and custom high intensity
headlights. |
 |
| Completed
as of 12/2005 |
 |
| All
of the body molding and emblems have been
removed and the holes filled. I left the
drivers door handle on as I was working
to get the electric doors installed. I have
all of the electrics and solenoids installed
and the front doors are working fine. The
rear doors still need a little work as simple
as using relays at the solenoids to get
them to operate better (one of the things
on my 'Do Next" list). All of the window
moldings/trim has been powder coated Black.
I have custom made billet grille sections,
but they have not been installed. The bumpers
have been filled and look great. The four
high intensity headlights are installed
and are very bright and have a very distinct
blue hue. I have two very, very nice ($200.00)
outside mirrors with built-in LED turn signals. |
