Nova By The Numbers

"I'm building a '65 Chevy Nova SS, but I'm not sure if it is actually a
Super Sport or just a clone. I've enclosed the numbers from the plate under
the hood. Could you tell me what the codes mean?" R.G., Sierra Vista, AZ

The numbers you copied are from what restorers refer to as the cowl tag or trim tag. These plates were riveted to the bodies as they were manufactured by Fisher Body, and were intended to signal line workers as to which items were to be installed as the car was being assembled. Today they solve many mysteries for those trying torestore older GM cars that have no build sheet.
Starting in the top left corner, the code "11D" designates the build date of the body---not the car itself. The first two digits are the month, while the third digit (a letter) stands for the week of the month. In your case, the body was built during the fourth week of November (probably 1964, as November '65 would have been the production of 1966 models).
Below that is the abbreviation, "STYL", which stands for body style. The first two digits of the code to the right of that indicate the model year, in your case, 1985, and the remaining digits are the body style and model. the 11000 series is the Chevy II line, and the 837 model is the Nova Super Sport with an eight-cylinder engine (737 would be an SS with a six-cylinder), so your car appears to be authentic.
Continuing with the decoding process, you'll see the leters "NOR" to the right of the style code, which stands for the Norwood, Ohio, assembly plant. The "1926" to the right of that has not yet been decoded, as these codes seem to vary between plants. the same can be said for the "E" above the word 'BODY", although below tht you'll see the word "PAINT", and to the left of that a letter code. Yours is N-N, which indicates that the paint is the same color on the top and bottom sections of the body (different letters would indicate a two-tone paint scheme). The N-N decodes to Madeira Maroon.
Far left of the paint code is the word "TRIM", which denotes the interior appointments. The "712" code of your Nova is an SS-only trim in Black. Below the trim codes are random options codes, which have not yet been released.
We were ableto decode your trim tag using information from Chevrolet by the Numbers: 1965-69, by Alan L. colvin, published by Robert Bentley Publishing (800.423.4595). Colvin has also compiled code breaker books for '55-'59, '60-'64, and '70-'75 Chevrolets.
